Pastor Schmidt is a caring, Bible-believing, Lutheran pastor. He leads our worship services (including Advent and Lenten midweek services) and preaches at each service. He teaches an Adult Bible Study on Sunday morning, the Jr. Confirmation (7th and 8th grade) Catechism class on Wednesdays during the school year, and the new member Inquirer Classes (6 sessions each) twice a year. He visits the hospitalized and shut-ins. He meets with members and non-members alike. He also spends time in the Early Learning Center for Bible Time and Chapel a couple of times a month, getting to know our young students.
Pastor Schmidt likes being involved in the community. He attends circuit meetings once a month with other LCMS pastors in the area. He is part of the Manhattan Evangelical Association, a group of pastors that meet twice a month to pray. He meets with the Manhattan Ministerial Alliance once a month.
Our pastor was born and raised in Southern California. He attended a LCMS parochial school from 1st through 8th grade. He spent time with Campus Life (a division of Youth for Christ) as a high school student, a college volunteer, and as a paid Campus Life Director. He worked as a Camp Counselor for two summers at Arrowhead Lutheran Camp in California. He also worked one summer (in 1987) as a Youth Director at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Arcadia, CA.
Pastor Schmidt has also spent time in non-church related activities and organizations. He played baseball in the city leagues where he grew up. He attended a Arcadia High School, graduating in 1984. He earned his B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Cal Poly, Pomona in 1989. He worked as an intern at Metric Machining and McDonald Douglas, both in Monrovia, California, and also United Parcel Service (UPS) in Anaheim and Laguna Hills, California.
Before attending seminary, our pastor attended Christ College Irvine (now Concordia University Irvine) taking pre-seminary classes. He then attended Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, earning a Masters of Divinity (1995) and a Masters of Sacred Theology (1996). During his third year of seminary (1993-1994), he did his vicarage (or internship) in Gainesville, Florida.
His first call in 1996 was to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Fremont, California, where he was ordained and installed on July 7, 1996. He was called to be the Associate Pastor, spending his time with youth and evangelism. In 2000, he accepted a call to be the sole pastor of Desert Foothills Lutheran Church in Scottsdale, Arizona, and was installed on September 10, 2000. During his time in the desert, he also earned a Masters of Science – Family Life from Concordia University Nebraska, graduating in 2011. He accepted the call to be the Sr. Pastor at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Manhattan, Kansas in the summer of 2011, and he was installed on October 2, 2011.
He married his wife, Kristina, in 1997, and together they have 4 children. They enjoy spending time with one another and being involved in their children’s activities which include church functions (of course!), school functions, sports, and scouts.
Our pastor likes to meet with folks and get to know them. Hopefully you and he will be able to get connected.
